Description

During the 307 class experience, we took a day trip to teach and work with elementary and middle school students at Zapata Elementary School.I taught a printmaking lesson to a 4th-grade class and helped out with a 5th grade, 7th, and 8th-grade class. The 5th graders also did printmaking, the 7th graders did a graffiti lesson and the 8th graders made zines. We got time to prepare materials and examples prior to class and during the day got to work in groups to teach the assigned classes their art lessons.

RAtionale

This Zapata trip was a wonderful experience. Having the chance to spend a day in an "art on a cart" type environment posed a lot of challenges compared to other observations I have had previously. That being said, the students we taught had some but not a lot of art skills built throughout the years. I and my peers had to be very cognizant of designing lessons that could 1. be close to if not completely finished during one class period and 2. fit the needs of all the students (not too advanced or we would not retain students attention). On top of this, a lot of these students were English Language Learners or English just was not the primary language spoken. For the most part, students spoke Spanish. I created some vocabulary words in both Spanish and English to help best suit these students. What was amazing to see was other students would help each other and translate for one and other on words that I or my peers could not translate. I learned a lot from this teaching trip and would love to teach in an environment like this again in the future.

CONSIDERATION OF THE DIVERSE NEEDS OF LEARNERS

DESCription

Throughout this course and through other teaching experiences, I have learned how vital accommodations and modications are. Modifications and accommodations are tools teachers have to create and adapt any lesson or unit to best fit the needs of all students. This class taught me several tools and ways to accomodate and modify lessons to ensure all students can succeed. In the art classroom, you will face a variety of student needs. This can range from gifted students, to students with hearing impariments, to students with physical disabilities, and so much more. By being aware of these disabilities and how to best accommodate and/or modify any assignment is a wonderful skill to learn. I think this content goes beyond the lesson itself and can expand to fit classroom setup, routines, and management. I plan to be very conscious of all my student's needs and create an environment to ensure that all my students are successful and can create wonderful works of art regardless of ability level.

This PDF is my characteristics and Accommodation Chart created in ART 307. This document defines a variety of disabilities and I have listed key characteristics and some ways to accommodate the given disability.
