 TWO SATURDAY CLASS LESSON PLANS

7B: understands a variety of current age-appropriate instructional strategies and their applications.

DESCRIPTION

The word documents to the right are the unit plans for the Saturday Art Classes. In the Saturday Art Classes I worked with 32 5/6th graders for 3 weeks and then about 18 2nd graders for the remaining two weeks. With my partner Brooke Ball, we prepared a unit for our 5th and 6th graders for students to use clay to create clay animal hybrids. The goal was to teach students about clay and forming with clay while educating them on the dangers animals face. The second graders used recycled materials to design and create shelters for feral/stray cats.

2nd Grade (weeks 4+5)

5/6th Grade (weeks 1-3)

RATIONALE

Through writing and teaching this lesson I learned a lot about working in my own classroom. I got the opportunity to work with a large group of students and start to develop a classroom culture. In addition, teaching and writing this lesson helped me understand what I need to do differently the next time I teach this lesson to improve it's overall effectiveness. I learned a lot about how I can teach art to students in elementary school. This experience was the closest I have gotten to having my own classroom and I learned a lot about myself and how to discuss art to elementary aged students. I am thankful for the experience to learn how to better teach students of all ages.

SATURDAY CLASS CLASSROOM SET-UP DOCUMENTATION

DESCRIPTION

The image below shows the classroom setup and visual supports in the blank grade classroom. The image shows the way the students sat and age-appropriate posters, vocabulary, and visual supports.

RATIONALE

These photos show evidence of my ability to arrange a room that promotes learning. The desks for my 5/6th classroom originally were set up in a "U" formation with the intention to make it easier for each student to see and focus on the front of the room and to minimize distractions. In the image, you can notice that this was changed to putting students in small groups. This helped as there were so many students in the class it allowed for smoother transitions and conversations without yelling across the entire room. The materials table was in the back of the class to ease foot traffic. Throughout the classroom, there are posters, images, vocabulary, and visual schedules to assist students' learning and serve as added resources.

Keynote Speaker  Estela Mara Bensimon

DESCRIPTION

I got the opportunity to attend the CRCC ( culturally relevant community conference) conference this year. Before attending lectures, I went to the keynote speaker lunch. I got to hear educator Estela Mara Bensimon discuss educational equity as well as the disadvantages minority students face throughout their education.

RATIONALE

By going to this event, I gained more insights to equity in education. I learned about how minority students are at severe disadvantages throughout their educational experience. We discussed how as educators it is crucial to teach with equity so we can provide the best opportunity for all of our students.

DESCRIPTION

I read the book by Danielle Krysa titled A Big Important Art Book Now With Women! This was a very informative book about a lot of different female artists throughout different time periods and different mediums.

RATIONALE

This book was very informative and as an educator, it posed a lot of information to aid me in my teaching in the future. I feel that male artists are the most discussed and used as examples for all mediums. It is easy to talk about Picasso and Monet and Van Gogh as they are school appropriate well-known artists. However, I really try to branch out to find new artists to learn about myself and to show in my classroom. This book will serve as a great resource for me to bring new contemporary female artists to my students. I learned a lot and some artists sparked a lot of new ideas for future lessons.

7N: advances her knowledge of current developments in the field by participating in professional development activities

DESCRIPTION

This September, I participated in Shirley Ryan's annual Art in Motion (AIM) art show. I got to display five works of art ( a drawing, a painting, a mixed media piece, a ceramic vessel, and a print). This year I was lucky enough to sell all my work and recieve 50% while the other 50% of the proceeds go to Shirley Ryan's art therapy program.

RATIONALE

I learned a lot from this experience. I have participated in this art show for two years now after being hospitalized in Shirley Ryan in 2018. This art show is very important to me for many reasons. It serves as an opportunity for growth as an artist and supports a wonderful hospital and its art therapy program. Getting the opportunity to sell my work is a rewarding experience and to have it go to a wonderful program makes it even more empowering. Just to share the space for a night with artists who are either current or previous hospital patients makes it even more special. Art is a powerful healing tool and I am always thankful to be a part of this art show.

DESCRIPTION

I got the opportunity to work with Illinois Art Station (IAS) this semester. I got to work with students aged 3 and 4 and create art projects with them. I helped not only students with projects but also helped prepare materials.  I learned a lot about the development of young students. I work at the table of students with disabilities. I love the chance to work with young students. I personally see myself as an elementary art teacher. Getting to work with 3 and 4-year-olds was a lot of fun for me and I felt like I grew a lot through this experience.

RATIONALE

I learned a lot working with IAS. I got to work with young students which I love. I also got to gain more experience with students with disabilities. I really gained a lot from that. I worked with a wide range from students who were nonverbal to high functioning students with Austim. I felt really in my element when I was working with these students. I feel that art is a great opportunity to be interdisciplinary as well as teach social and emotional skils along with teaching fine motor skills. I think this opportunity opens the idea of working in a community based organization and the pros and cons compaired to a typical classroom art teacher. What I learned from IAS will definatley serve me well in my future classroom. I loved my time at IAS and look forward to more time in similar environments.
